Civics-Focus-Seminar-World

Civics:  You received credit for Cornell 5.1-5.3. We will begin to go over that info tomorrow because we ran out of time today. In class we recapped precedent and focused on the application of the additional cases. As you can see, "What TIME it is" and "WHERE" an event is, as well as "HOW" of an activity may impact the decision of the court. This is application and application needs precedent, a law (statute), or the Constitution to formulate reasoning.  We listed two reports, one about executive privilege related to the Obama appointments of Sec. of Defense, and Sec. of State, and the other about gun control... the by back program in Arizona.

For tomorrow, read and ANNOTATE using F-IRAC the constitutional law cases I distributed at the end of the class.

Cornell Notes were credited and we discussed  their content while debriefing what we already know about the Mongols.  Exit slips were returned with a comment and we began our focus on whether or not the Mongols have been getting a bad rap...  Respond to the two questions for tomorrow.

Civics, Seminar, World

Civics: Today we completed debriefing the Founding Rivalries and discussed the "take away's" from the reading. 1. The founding fathers did not like each other and were not nice to each other. 2. Most were concerned with individual good rather than common good, and 3. The cultural myth of "good" presidents is just that, a myth.  Take time to review the reading and think about the significance of what they did and how they did it.

Our focus today was on the Judiciary, their role and how they interpret law via judicial review and precedent. We learned about the legal system, civil & criminal case titles and various forms of law.  I distributed a handout which can be found in the text. It's section 4.5 and includes cases for analysis. On the handout I included an acronym for analyzing a case, IRAC.  We used the analysis technique to navigate Marbury v. Madison but will finish that in class on Monday.  For the weekend, Due Monday, complete the remaining two cases, McCullough and Nixon.  Do the best you can applying the analysis tactics.
You received Cornell notes for Ch. 5/1-5.3, These are due in Wednesday, 1/7.  You will find them posted on the website.
