World, Economics, 13th Seminar

SCHOOL IS CANCELLED FOR TUESDAY, JANUARY 29 DUE TO THE WEATHER.

World:  Today we began the Mongols: Here's the big question:  What about the Mongols led to their success? When considering that you need to contemplate: the characteristics, of the the people, the nature of the leadership, social organization (details), environmental features, nature of the technology, ideology.  You will gain a handle on that from the reading packet I assigned today, due on Friday.  In the end,  you need to determine whether or not, the "considerations" hindered or helped with the Mongol Success. In addition, rank the "considerations' for importance.

Mrs. Iden will be here beginning Wednesday.  You will be covering the Mongols. Be sure to work on the Mongol Pak due on Friday. In addition, keep up with the class work given during the week.  On Friday, you will receive Cornell Notes for 12.2 and 12.2, those are due on Tuesday.  Mongol reading pak and Cornell notes are posted on Website.

Do your best and have a great week!
Economics: we discussed the economies of guns today.  While considering gun rights, gun control and disarmament, you were instructed to begin accumulating arguments pro and con for a Socratic seminar discussion that will occur on Monday, February 3.  The argument map (posted on website) is due on Friday completed.  You need to include a thesis as well.  You will receive the handout in class on Wednesday, but if you want a copy now, print it off the website.

Here are the captions of the argument maps.
Advocates of gun control support stricter firearm laws: tougher background checks and longer waiting periods for those purchasing guns; mandatory child safety locks; a limit of one handgun purchase per month; and raising the legal age limit for ownership of guns to age 21 from the current age of 18. They believe these measures will curb the rise of gun-related violence

Advocates of gun rights say such legislation would infringe on the constitutional rights of law-abiding citizens. The National Rifle Association, a prominent voice in the gun debate, says firearm-control measures are unnecessary if lawmakers would enforce current laws.

Advocates of total disarmament: Taking away weapons, laying down arms, and the reduction of guns.
Use the week to research and formulate your pro-con arguments and thesis.

Do your best and have a great week!

World, Civics, 12th Focus

World: Our focus today was Spread of Islam using the cultures in motion reading (it has maps). We spent a lot of time pulling out key concepts related to spread with the ultimate focus being on how and why Islam spread to a particular region. In a class activity, you were asked to use PERSI, to explain spread, then you reported out to the class.  Key word today = Syncretism.  We've seen this before and YES, you remembered!  For this evening you are going to rehash what we did in class but this time you are going to do the thinking and writing.  Use the handout provided to complete the analysis.  We concentrated today on: Ways Islam spread, (Conquest, Trade, Missionaries, Appeal), contributing regional factors that allowed spread, the impact of trade and conquest that occurred with the death of Muhammad.     Due tomorrow for credit: Spread of Islam Analysis

Civics: In class we continued with Heller.  You learned how to analyze a case using the (F)IRAC analysis method and we began classifying persuasive arguments set forth in the case.  For tonight, READ the summary of the case. We will continue in class tomorrow with two activities.

Heller)  When reading use the following for analysis:  Find the facts (F), what the case is about.  Label the (I) Issue (the question before the court), Identify the reasoning of the court.  How is the court applying rule of law to the facts?  This is called Application (A).  Locate and identify the rule of law, (R), and note the conclusion, (C), the outcome of the case.

We will clarify the analysis piece tomorrow.  Be sure to do a good job reading the case.  While reading, consider the clauses of the 2nd amendment, Prefatory and  Operative.  Be sure to begin organizing and reviewing for the final exam.
