Today we completed a world history mystery about Great Zimbabwe. You have a quiz tomorrow on the material in Ch. 15. It will be the usual format. You may use your notes from the reading as well as your notes from the Timbuktu dvd. For this evening, review all the materials related to Islam to Africa that we have been focusing on.

Civics-Focus-World
Civics: Today we finished up our focus on the key concepts of the material in Ch. 4. For 4.5 only focus on Judicial Review (ability of a court to hear a case), Precedent, Strict and Loose Constructionist. Add those concepts and the 5 step process for judicial interpretation to your study guide. We will take a 40 point quiz on the material on Thursday.
We began reading Founding Rivalries in class today. I asked you to complete the first 5 questions. We will finish the reading in class on Thursday.

Civics-Focus-Seminar-World
Civics: Today we spent time recapping the material related to the Constitution and formulating a "study guide" for Thursday's quiz. I appears that you have a pretty good handle on what to grasp. For this evening, you are to SKIM over the FOUNDING RIVALRIES Reading, we will do the reading in class tomorrow. In addition, you are to read 4.5. Focus on Judicial Review and Precedent along with other key concepts related to Judicial Interpretation. If you were absent today, check the website for the Founding Rivalries reading.

Civics-Seminar-World
Civics: Today we exhausted our discussion of the material relate to the WHY behind the constitution in the wake of the failed Articles of Confederation. You should have a SOLID understanding of the concepts. Go back through the material to be sure you understand. We will have a short quiz next Thursday on the Constitution. Also, complete the back sheet of the Read To Learn. The sheet where you read the defining principles of the Constitution and create a symbol.
Seminar: Those who attended today received personal attention on the portfolio requirements. Keep working.
World: We discussed the material from 15.2 & 3. The Big Question: How did Africa's geography affect the development of the African kingdoms throughout the continent. Think about geography, politics, economics and religion. On Monday, we will debrief the 7 focus questions. Be sure to review the material. We will take a short quiz on Thursday of next week. It will cover the Kingdoms of Africa.

Civics: you received credit for today's homework and we carefully began going over its content while using the material set forth in the textbook. For tonight, you should review 4.2-4.4 VERY CAREFULLY. Feel free to add to your Cornell Notes.
We finished up the POWER quotes and made the connection about with limits on power as it relates to consent of the governed and popular sovereignty. All of the concepts we have covered hare appearing again in the framing process of the Constitution.
I provided a handout related to your insights and the preamble... we will continue with this in class tomorrow. If you were absent, pick up the handout in class tomorrow.

Civics: Today we finished up the common good experiment. Can you relate it to the significance of the Articles of Confederation? You took a recall quiz on the articles.... not really a quiz but an assessment of what you could remember. Those who earned more than a few wrong need to review the Articles because we will be moving to the Constitution tomorrow. In class you evaluated POWER quotes. We're not finished debriefing these, but will finish tomorrow. Think about the importance of POWER when it concerns making a government.

Focus: Comments have been posted from peer and from me regarding your first post. You are now working on your second post. Amp up the effort. Think out of the box and try to learn about something you know nothing about. Your 2nd post is due Thursday, 12/20.
Seminar: Today we evaluated portfolios. Those not up to date need to be here on Friday for individual attention. Those who are in the process of completing the requirements and are close, no need to attend. In class today we disclosed the semester format for internship, please inquire. We also distributed a community service prompt that you need to have completed for your portfolio which is due 1/7.
World: In class we finished up the PPT then began work on accumulating information on the Kingdoms of Africa. We will finish our activity (jigsaw) in class tomorrow. Be sure to review the PPT for understanding..it's posted on the website.

Civics: We finished going over the quiz today and you submitted quiz corrections. All grades have been posted on power school for your enjoyment. You should be reading and completing the Read to Learn for 4.2-4.4. Its' due on Thursday. We began in class an experiment related to common good. Respond to questions one and two of the experiment. We will continue with that in class tomorrow.
Focus: Today you commented on your classmates blogs. You should have posted at least 3 comments. You are also working on research for your second post. It's due next Thursday. I will read and comment on your first post in the next couple of days. Keep up the good work and try to stretch your thinking while thinking out of the box.

Civics: Today in class you worked with a partner to make corrections on the objective portion of your quiz. We also had you report out on your collaborations. Perhaps, now, after further discussion,you have a better handle on key concepts related to the objective portion of the quiz. For tomorrow, please make corrections on the short answer portion. You will need to return the short answer portion tomorrow at the start of class. Once we go over the short answer, I will enter the grades which will include a column for corrections into power school. Given to you today was a READ TO LEARN document for Chapter 4. Please begin work on the material in chapter 4, it concerns the Constitution. You should review the material from chapter 3.4-3.6, it will provide a good overview of some of the key ideas and reflect on the Articles of Confederation along with the weaknesses. We went over those again today.
Focus: Blog Post 1 is due today. We will share tomorrow, post comments, and begin research for blog post 2 Tuesday. Strand meets first tomorrow, there are no office hours.

Today we began Islam's spread into to start a brief exploration of Islamic influence on African societies which include east and west Africa. You also received a Cornell Note taking document for pages 413-419 (West Africa) and 422-427 (Eastern Africa). This material is due on Thursday for credit.

Civics-Focus-World
Civics: Today we discussed the significance of the Articles of Confederation and their failure, we also made light of the big ideas of the content. There is a quiz tomorrow. Bring all Cornell notes and written response work to the quiz. The test is objective and short/answer essay. Please bring a #2 pencil for the objective portion.
Focus: I have all but one blogspot address. You should be in the processing of making your first post. There is an extension to Monday due to Mrs.Newman's presentation today in our focus class. By the end of class on Monday, your first blog post should be published.
World: Today we continued viewing Monsoon Wedding. Again, you are viewing this film in the context of culture and caste. Be sure that you are completing the focus question handout during the film. You will receive credit for the focus questions.

We began Federalism.. the federalist and anti Federalist. I provided two handouts that are now posted on the website. We will continue with Federalism tomorrow.

Civics: Today we finished up our analysis of the D of I. We also decided that we could take a quiz on the material covered in Ch. 2 and 3 on Friday. I provided you with an informative assessment for Ch. 2 section 2.1-2.3, but be sure to add to it your knowledge of government systems and economic systems. Since we are currently covering ch. 3, you need to focus on that material as well. The key concepts set forth during our Locke journey are the concepts we aer rel voling around: Equality, Unalienable Rights, Consent of the Governed, Natural Rights, State of Nature, Treatise. Zoom in on the D of I. Tomorrow your Cornell notes for 3.4-3.6 are due. We will cover the material there tomorrow and Thursday. Our quiz on Friday will be objective and short answer. Should you need assistance, please see me.

Civics: Today we revisited, discussed and submitted the chart related to the philosophers and enlightenment thinkers and the roots of government. Be sure you understand the concepts of human nature and the forms of government for each individual as all contributed to our democracy in some way shape or form. We are still covering material from 3.1-3.3, thus you have not tuned in your Cornell for those topics, but it was due last week and has been credited. Remember, you will be able to use the Cornell on the upcoming quiz.
We continued analyzing the Dof I. Those absent have a little catch up work to do. For this evening, answer the questions related to the 3rd and 4th bullets on the D of I handout. We will continue with the activity tomorrow. Due Wednesday are the Cornell for 3.4-3.6.
